On the 14th June German tenor Jonas Kaufmann walked onto the stage of La Scala Milan, the home of Italian opera, for one of the most highly anticipated performances of 2015.
The concert made national news in Italy and following five encores and 40mins of applause audiences were still left wanting more. This legendary performance is now the focus of a new concert film directed by Brian Large and produced by Arts Alliance.
Cinema audiences worldwide will experience this unforgettable event, and be treated to a revealing introduction to Puccini – the man, the musician, the superstar – narrated by Jonas and featuring rare archive footage.
Puccini’s operas include some of the most well-known melodies in classical music, and his popularity amongst opera fans and novices alike is a testament to his enduring appeal. One such melody is the iconic aria from Turandot – ‘Nessun Dorma’.
This aria holds a special place in Jonas’ heart: “No aria is as loved today as ‘Nessun dorma’. The legendary first concert of the Three Tenors took place only a few days before my twenty-first birthday, and for a long time I didn’t dare sing ‘Nessun dorma’ myself, since I was so in awe of the aria’s magic and its incredible appeal. Even today, whenever I hear and sing this aria, I still get goosebumps.”

The all Puccini program, sung by Jonas Kaufmann, ended up in standing ovations, “Bravi”-cheers, requests for “Bis”(= Eng. Encore) and five encores with over 40 minutes of applause.

Jonas Kaufmann is one of the world’s most sought-after tenors. In spring 2015, the Munich Radio Orchestra and conductor Jochen Rieder will accompany him on a tour with 10 concerts in the German-speaking countries and a stopover in Paris.
The evening’s programme includes operetta favourites such as “Grüss mir mein Wien” from “Gräfin Mariza” (Countess Maritza) and “Dein ist mein ganzes Herz” from “Das Land des Lächelns” (The Land of Smiles), as well as popular tunes from the vintage films “Ein Lied geht um die Welt” and “Das Liebeskommando”. The title of this tour and the corresponding CD, “Du bist die Welt für mich” (You are the entire world for me), however, refers to a song from an operetta composed by legendary tenor Richard Tauber, “Der singende Traum” (The Singing Dream).
Interspersed between the vocal numbers will be orchestral hits such as “Ballsirenen”, the famous waltz from “The Merry Widow”, or Robert Stolz’ march “Frühjahrsparade” (Spring Parade)
The Making of DU BIST DIE WELT FÜR MICH
On 4 January 2015, the Berlin concert of DU BIST DIE WELT FÜR MICH with Jonas Kaufmann, Julia Kleiter and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin conducted by Jochen Rieder will be shown for the first time on televison by ARTE, the joint French and German culture channel.
One hour before the concert, you can see Jonas Kaufmann retracing the lives of great singers and composers of the 1930ies in the documentary „Berlin 1930“. In addition, he gives an exclusive insight into the creation and production of his new project DU BIST DIE WELT FÜR MICH.

Today, Jonas Kaufmann is considered the most successful and best tenor in the world. On his new album the German star recorded melodies for millions: popular hits from the Twenties and early Thirties. Some of these evergreens have in fact played an important part in his gala concerts for many years: „Dein ist mein ganzes Herz“, „Freunde, das Leben ist lebenswert“, „Du bist die Welt für mich“… On this new recording, Jonas Kaufmann takes up the chance to show the immense expressive range of his stunning tenor voice, from a warbling croon to manly heroism – thereby demonstrating why the best composers of that period, Lehár, Kálmán, Abraham or Benatzky, wrote their most memorable tunes for leading operatic tenors like Richard Tauber. The album was recorded in a stilistically appropriate atmosphere with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and conductor Jochen Rieder at the historic Berlin Broadcasting House in Nalepa street.
A few days ago, Jochen Rieder returned from Australia, where he had joined Jonas Kaufmann for his successful and eagerly awaited debut down-under. Their three sold-out concerts, two at the Sydney Opera House and one at Melbourne‘s Hamer Hall, were most enthusiastically received and the artists decided to thank Australians for their standing ovations with 5 encores.
